Key Components & Working Principle

1. Crank Handle: The user’s interface—turning the handle initiates the process.
2. Gear Train: A set of interlocking gears (often a worm gear or spur gear system) that amplifies the force from the crank. For example, a worm gear drive not only boosts torque but also provides self-locking capability: it prevents the load from slipping backward even if the handle is released, a critical safety feature for lifting.
3. Drum (or Spool): A cylindrical component that winds up a cable, rope, or chain as the gears turn. The length of the drum determines how much cable/chain can be stored, limiting the maximum lift or pull distance.
4. Cable/Chain/Belt: The load-bearing element attached to the drum. Materials vary by use case: steel cables for heavy-duty industrial work, galvanized chains for corrosion resistance (e.g., marine settings), and nylon ropes for lighter, outdoor tasks (e.g., camping).
5. Brake System: A built-in mechanism (mechanical or centrifugal) that secures the load during operation and prevents accidental release. This is especially vital when lifting vertical loads, as it eliminates the risk of the drum unwinding unexpectedly.  

When the user turns the crank, the gear train reduces the speed of the handle’s rotation but multiplies its force, causing the drum to spin slowly. As the drum spins, it winds the cable/chain, pulling or lifting the connected load. The self-locking gear design ensures the load stays in place until the user manually reverses the crank to lower or release it.
