Shackles: Essential Components for Lifting and Rigging Operations
Types and Designs
- Screw Pin Shackles: These feature a threaded pin that screws into the body, allowing for easy installation and removal. They are best suited for tension-dominant loads (with minimal side loads or sudden shocks).
- Bolt-Type Shackles (with Safety Pins): Equipped with a bolt, nut, and a safety cotter pin (or similar retaining mechanism), these offer enhanced security. The safety pin prevents the bolt from accidentally unscrewing, making them ideal for critical lifts or loads exposed to lateral forces.
- Shape Variations (U-Shaped vs. D-Shaped/Bow): U-shaped “chain shackles” excel at straight-line pulls, while D-shaped (bow) shackles provide a wider bearing surface. Bow shackles are preferred for complex rigging setups (accommodating loads from multiple directions).
